If you have been #kickingitwithraye then you know that back in November 2015, I decided to embark on a journey into the world of affiliate marketing. The unknown abyss that is affiliate marketing seemed like such a scary place kind of like how Youtube appears to me. I wanted to start making residual money from my blog and after reading multiple posts, I decided this was the way to do it. I have learned from my mistakes in my first month of affiliate marketing, created a solid plan and put it into action.
Last week, I made $40 in 40 hours from affiliate marketing. Now, that's not impressive by any means of the imagination in terms of the number. But, the money was generated while I was sleeping, at work, on the train and enjoying family time with my son. The fact that income is generated and I don't even have to be there is a concept that excites me. I can get jiggy with that shit! In this post, we are going to do an overview of my affiliate marketing strategy and what I found worked for me.
First, I reviewed the list of affiliate programs I belonged to and made a few changes as in I quit a majority of the programs that seemed to similar or that I would never use in the first place. After dwindling my options down, I went to each website I was an affiliate of, searched the internet endlessly for reviews of the company including Youtube videos. I requested free merchandise from the stores being extremely careful not to order something that I had seen in any other review in exchange for a review and I also placed my affiliate links in all posts. *NOT all of the companies sent me free stuff, I did have to buy some but I used my link to make sure I received cash back for the purchase. My reviews generate clicks from google searches for months on end. My review on Sammy Dress is one of my most clicked blog posts with over 15,000 views since I posted it. Even though it received so many hits, my affiliate link only had about 400 clicks and I had only generated 3 sales from that post. But, when I posted my new garments as a regular picture with no blog URL or mention of a blog in various Facebook groups, I had generated 600 clicks in less than 2 hours. Yes, you read that correctly. Some people bought stuff immediately while others trickled in a few days later. The beautiful thing about affiliate links is that the cookies stay active anywhere from 60-90 days so if anyone purchases from my affiliate links within that time frame, I get paid.
Here are some bomb ass tips to help you get paid from affiliate marketing.
- Create a marketing plan through trial and error to make the most out of your affiliate marketing efforts, note the types of posts that garner more clicks, the day/time posted, the wording and the placement of the link
- Speak to your affiliate plan manager as they're able to make suggestions for you to get the most out of your experience. They benefit too if you do well.
-Support brands that only support you. This may seem childish and superficial but why are you promoting Forever21 and making them money but they're not supporting you!
-Concentrate your efforts where you see the most clicks. In the beginning, I did tons of Pinterest and Tumblr posts with my affiliate links however, they produced the least clicks and absolutely no sales. Which turned out to be a huge waste of my time. Facebook and twitter generate the most sales for me.
Yaro wrote an incredibly detailed post on affiliate marketing. We have similar thoughts and experiences with it except he's making about 10k per month which is where I aspire to be soon!
